Welcome to the Department of Neurology

The Department of Neurology is a specialised academic and clinical department, dedicated to excellence in the scientific study, diagnosis, medical management, and long-term care of disorders affecting the central and peripheral nervous system. Neurology occupies a critical interface between basic neuroscience and clinical medicine, requiring  detailed understanding of neuro-anatomy, neuro-physiology, and neuropathophysiology to inform accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment.

As a highly specialised discipline, our department provides comprehensive neurological services and training for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions of the brain, spinal cord, cranial and peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction and muscle. These include for example cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, movement disorders, demyelinating disease, neurodegenerative disorders, neuromuscular and peripheral nerve disorders, headache syndromes, disorders of consciousness, and higher cortical dysfunction.

Shaping World-Class Neurologists
Neurologists specialise in the diagnosis and medical (non-surgical) management of disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system. We train our neurologists to apply detailed clinical examination techniques, neurophysiological testing, and neuro-imaging to localise disease processes and formulate precise, mechanism-based management strategies. Clinical care is guided by evidence-based protocols, advanced diagnostic evaluation, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Our Training and Academic Excellence
Postgraduate training is a core function of our department. Our training programmes are designed to produce highly competent specialists who are clinically adept, ethically grounded, and well prepared to meet the evolving neurological healthcare needs of South Africa and beyond.

Registrars gain extensive experience in both clinical localisation, diagnostic reasoning, and neurophysiological assessment. Structured clinical exposure and supervised training culminating in the Master of Medicine (MMed) specialisation in Neurology, preparing graduates for independent specialist practice and academic contribution.

Research and Innovation
Research forms an integral part of the department’s academic mandate. Through clinically relevant and translational research, and scholarly activity, we contribute to the understanding of neurological disease mechanisms, diagnostic methodologies, and improved therapeutic approaches. Research activity supports continual refinement of clinical practice and aligns with national and international standards in neurological science.

Through excellence in clinical care, specialist training, and research, we remain committed to advancing neurological health and delivering meaningful impact for the patients and communities we serve.

Our department offers the opportunity to engage with a dynamic, academically rigorous environment at the forefront of clinical neuroscience. If you are interested in advancing neurological science, developing high-level diagnostic expertise, and contributing meaningfully to patient care and academic medicine, please contact the Department of Neurology to enquire about the options available to you.
