Welcome to the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of the Free State (UFS) is a highly specialised, intensive diagnostic and therapeutic speciality that addresses both congenital and acquired conditions of the heart and chest in patients of all ages. We aim to improve or preserve their quality of life by positively altering the natural progression of cardiothoracic disease.
Decades of Dedication
The Department of Cardiac Surgery was founded in 1973. It was initially situated in National Hospital but rendered services at Pelonomi Hospital. In 1995, the Unit moved to its present location at Universitas Hospital.
Since its inception more than fifty years ago, our Department has made significant strides. From the establishment of a homograft bank to the development of a paediatric cardiac surgery programme, the department has been at the forefront of surgical innovation and medical advancement,
Currently, our Department stands proud as a high-volume, highly specialised surgical unit, performing approximately:
- 500 adult cardiac procedures annually
- 180 paediatric cardiac procedures annually
- 200 thoracic procedures per year
Training and Education
Our Department is proud of its contribution to medical education and offers structured training programs in:
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- Perfusion technology
- Intensive care for registrars, technologists, and nurses
Our approach integrates clinical excellence with practical skills training and multidisciplinary collaboration. Our Department is also actively involved in Health Economics to ensure the long-term sustainability of its service delivery and training programmes.

Our dedicated and active research division focuses on innovation and development in:
- Biological tissue development
- Homograft research
- Coronary artery interventions
- Perfusion-related topics
- End-stage heart disease
Our Department has a dedicated laboratory, as well as access to a large animal research facility, where various active projects are currently underway.
